Carolina
Carolina was founded in 1927 by Dr. Thomas E. Powell Jr. when he was just a young biology and geology professor at Elon College (now Elon University). Back in those days, biology teachers and professors had to go out and collect most of the specimens and materials they used in their lessons and laboratory sessions. This understandably took a lot of time and effort. Powell would often get more materials than he needed during his outings and began to sell them to his colleagues who appreciated the time they’d save and the convenience of getting specimens and materials without needing to hunt them down. This led Powell to start Carolina as a part-time business selling these materials. By the mid-1930s, the need for the materials became so great that Powell turned the Carolina Biological Supply Company into a full-time business. Today, Carolina is one of the leading suppliers of science teaching materials.
Carolina has trained biologists that are able to culture and ship out 150 types of bacteria and fungi, more than 30 species of protozoa, over 130 types of algae and many different plant tissue cultures. Educators and scientists can also get living organisms, preserved specimens, tissue culture kits, laboratory equipment and supplies, anatomical models and skeletons and learning materials for kindergarten through college level classes. You’ll even find distance learning and e-learning resources available. Science, chemistry, geology and biology teachers trust Carolina to provide high-quality, affordable resources to help facilitate learning, safety and exploration of the fields.
